During the guided tour Antwerp à la carte, a guide will show the students the surprising, tortuous and often invisible trail of the food chain through Antwerp. This is a fascinating interactive tour at the MAS with many invitations to observe and join in activities on this universal theme.

Today, more than half of the world’s population lives in cities. Antwerp, for example, has more than 500,000 inhabitants. That’s half a million mouths that need to be fed daily. How do we succeed in doing this today, what will we need to do in the future and how is that different from what happened a few centuries ago?
‘Antwerp à la carte’ at the MAS will introduce you to how products are supplied from the countryside – whether from close by or overseas – to the city; the lively sale of native and exotic products at markets and in shops; dining in the city, from chic hotels to snack bars; and the trajectory of food from the city back to the country – often in the form of human waste.
Of course, the guide will take into account the language level of the group. He/she will encourage the students to express their ideas and observations in their own words. The guided tour takes place in the museum hall on the fifth floor of the MAS. Later on you will be free to visit the other rooms in the MAS at your own pace.
