Where do the many statues of the Holly Virgin in Antwerp come from?
As the patron saint of the city of Antwerp, the Virgin is very present along the streets: if you look closely around you, you will see more than 150 statues of the Virgin on the facades of houses in the city center. In many cases, they are of high quality and carved by or attributed to renowned sculptors. They are more fragile than one might think and require regular maintenance, a task that the non-profit organization “Voor Kruis en Beeld” takes on with great enthusiasm.

Many of the statues are almost 300 years old and also have a lot to tell us about the religious and social history of Antwerp. All these aspects and stories are evoked during this Marian walk in the historical center. Mary looks at passers-by with a gentle and protective gaze of the city.
