The Art Nouveau trail along the railway
2023 marks the 130th anniversary of the introduction of Art Nouveau in Belgium, particularly with Brussels as its epicentre. Brussels architects such as Horta, Hankar, Van de Velde etc. set the scene of this innovative architecture, soon to be imitated in various other cities in Europe. In Antwerp too the new style was introduced by local architects, albeit a few years later and showing a more cautious approach. A few Antwerp architects came out with original ideas, whereas others got their inspiration from their Brussels colleagues and, gradually, developed a style of their own.

Best known are the Art Nouveau houses in the southern part of the Zurenborg quarter, which is located between the railway stations Antwerpen-Berchem and Antwerpen-Centraal, but in other parts of the city this frivolous architecture has left some genuine architectural gems as well. This tour will reveal a great deal of them on both sides of the elevated railway between Antwerp and Mechelen.
