People with dementia and their carers do not always have the chance to go out and enjoy themselves together. Experiencing art together in a relaxed atmosphere in the openness of a museum park has a fantastic influence on the relationship between the person suffering from dementia and the carer. It will be a wonderful experience — away from the everyday routine at home!

  • Experiencing art not only leads to an improvement in the quality of life of the person with dementia, but it also has positive effects on the carer and helps to improve the relationship between them. The guided tours at the Middelheim Museum are a perfect response.
  • The various themed walking routes are accessible to people in wheelchairs and their companions. After the guided tour there is time to have a chat in a quiet spot or in the Middelheim Museum café.

  • This guided tour is suitable for groups of adults with dementia residing in residential care centres
  • Maximum 8 persons per group (including companions)
  • Duration: 120 minutes
  • Museum entrance is free

The museum is open every day of the week, except on Monday: the opening hours depend on the season
October - March: 10:00-17:00
April: 10:00-19:00
May - August: 10:00-20:00
September : 10:00-19:00
The museum is closed on the following holidays: 1 January, 1 May, Ascension Day, 1 November and 25 December
The museum is exceptionally open on the following holidays: Easter Monday and Whit Monday
Attention: the museum park is closed during stormy weather

In April 2014, the Middelheim Museum started a special programme for people with (young-onset) dementia. These guided tours follow the example of the Meet Me @ MoMa programme of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the M HKA in Antwerp were also inspired by this programme for people with dementia. In collaboration with the senior council of the Antwerp district.
