MAS: Permanent collection + To the Antarctic
The MAS is a place where you can look at the world, the city and yourself. Over 500,000 objects in the MAS collection form a river of tales about art and cultural traditions from all over the world, about the history of the city and the port and about overseas shipping and trade. This iconic building is the place where the city and the world meet and where the connection is made between the past, present and future.
From 21st June until 3rd November 2024 the exposition To the Antarctic. Belgica’s polar pioneers takes you some 125 years back in time, when the ship Belgica sets off from Antwerp, under a bright sun. The expedition heads for the sixth continent, Antarctica. You can visit this temporary exposition on the 3rd floor of the MAS.

The MAS is more than just a museum. It is an impressive repository in the middle of the Eilandje, which is a thriving neighbourhood. Its boulevard, with glass panels that are 6 metres high, will take you 60 metres higher. On the rooftop terrace you’ll enjoy a 360-degree panorama of the city, the port and the river.
Some 125 years ago, the ship Belgica sets off from Antwerp, under a bright sun. The expedition heads for the sixth continent, Antarctica. The world maps at the time are almost completed, but Antarctica is still uncharted territory. The international, but very young crew led by Adrien de Gerlache, will become the first to spend an unplanned winter in the Antarctic. When the polar winter sets in, the ship gets stuck in the pack ice.
