‘t Eilandje is inseparable from water. A swampy area where, in the golden 16th century of Antwerp, small canals were already being used to moor ships.
Napoleon constructed the first docks there around 1800. Call it the first impetus to the world port that the Port of Antwerp is today… the second largest in Europe!

We explore the rugged waterfront along the Scheldt. With the Dry Dock Island, the renovation of the Royers Lock and the works on “The Yard of the Century; the Oosterweel Works,” this area is in full development. The Shop reminds us of the recruitment office for ship repairers, the Red Starline Museum of the millions of land movers who left Europe via Antwerp for New York.
On the other side of the Kattendijk dock, the 19th-century port area was transformed into a hip neighborhood. The old warehouses were skillfully converted into modern apartments with attention to space and greenery.
The Cadix neighborhood….. Where living on and near the water has a central role. But where we also find the Church Ship, the Seef Brewery, the Schengen Square, a stairway quay and the pontoon on the Kattendijk dock. The connection between water and the city is never far away.
Highly recommended for anyone who has not yet visited this piece of unprecedented Antwerp!
