An art history museum that delves into the history of the Flemish identity, especially the period of the 16th and 17th centuries, is very inspiring for every visitor. It was not an easy period of time, just as it is not today, and the Southern Netherlands underwent an identity crisis in many areas. There was Spanish domination, which was accompanied by many wars and disagreements, religious unrest and cultural differences. But there were also citizens who sensitized others in order to preserve the uniqueness of our region. A man like Nicolaas Rockox, several times mayor of Antwerp, is certainly an example of this.
