Workshop: 100 x Congo – secondary education

During the interactive guided tour ‘100 x Congo’, the students will be invited to view the objects that the city of Antwerp acquired during the colonial period. During the workshop that follows the tour they will dive deeper into the Belgian colonial heritage and discover why decolonisation is important.

Via the ‘100 x Congo’ tour at the MAS, the students can reflect on the representation of Africans throughout history. They will discover how Antwerp painters portrayed African people and how Congolese people were ‘exhibited’ at the world fairs in Antwerp.

The workshop that follows will encourage the students to reflect about colonisation and decolonisation. How does the colonial past weigh on our current society, even 60 years after Congolese independence?

• This workshop is suitable for all years of secondary education
• Maximum 15 persons per group, maximum 2 groups at the same time
• Duration: 120 minutes
• Museum admission: free of charge for school groups
