From November 10nd 2023 until March 3th 2024
Contemporary artists examine Museum Mayer van den Bergh’s collection and enter into dialogue. Amongst the centuries-old paintings, understated sculpture and lavish retables, contemporary works of art will be on display between 10 November 2023 and 3 March 2024. Fifteen artists drew inspiration from the museum’s masterpieces. Among others, Adrian Ghenie, Ben Sledsens, Bram Demunter, Rinus Van de Velde, Dennis Tyfus and Jonathan Meese created specially for this exhibition new work. The interaction between old and new is at the heart of this exhibition. For example, do you look at a 600-year-old tower retable differently when it is juxtaposed with new imagery? And how does that work in the other direction: does the layer of meaning of a contemporary work change when you place ancient art next to it?
