The Old Courthouse
Since June 2024, the Court of Appeal and the Court of Labour, along with associated services, have moved from the Waalse Kaai to the Old Courthouse on the Britselei. In addition to the Butterfly Palace on the Bolivarplaats, Antwerp now boasts a beautiful new justice building after extensive renovation works. From now on, Antwerp’s assizes trials will also be held in this building.

During the guided tour, which starts outside if the weather is dry, we talk about the history of this building and also emphasize that the return of justice to this location will give a significant boost to the neighbourhood.
Unless it is being used for an assizes trial or another activity, we will focus on the beautiful scenes in the assizes courtroom. However, even if we cannot enter the courtroom, there are plenty of other fascinating rooms that we can visit.
The building’s past and present will be highlighted: lovers of contemporary architecture and new sustainable technologies will certainly be satisfied.
We will also gladly discuss the challenges facing the justice system, providing material for discussion afterward.
Practical information:
- Duration: 90 minutes
- Maximum 20 persons per guide
- Photography is prohibited in the Palace of Justice due to privacy concerns.
- There are quite a few stairs to climb, but an elevator is available.
- Sharp objects are strictly prohibited, such as: knives, nail clippers, etc. Everyone must pass through the scanner upon entry, similar to airport security.
